That the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is sitting on a bed of thorns at present is a well-established fact. With the Supreme Court dealing it a massive blow by removing both Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke from their posts as president and secretary respectively, and the Shashank Manohar-led International Cricket Council (ICC) increasing its sanctions on the richest cricket body in the world, things don't look to be sailing too smoothly for the Indian board.
Among the latest issues to emerge from the recent events is that of the support staff expressing their disapproval of the current regime by refusing to accept the 25 percent salary hike that has been offered to them, according to a report in The Indian Express.
The support staff, which includes batting coach Sanjay Bangar, had been offered a 100 percent hike by the Thakur administration when England toured India between November 2016 and February 2017. The staff members had apparently got the assurance after meeting both Thakur and Shirke, and the matter was suspended after the two were removed from office. The offer from BCCI CEO Rahul Johri after the appointment of the Vinod Rai-led Committee of Administrators (COA) turned out to be far below the staffers' expectations.
"It has been a case of discrimination and even the Indian team coach Anil Kumble and captain Virat Kohli felt that the support staff need a good hike," a source was quoted as saying, according to the report.
While Indian leg-spin legend Kumble was appointed as the head coach last year, and his salary is said to be streets ahead of what his support staffers earn, the latter have been around for three years now, with Bangar and fielding coach R Sridhar getting appointed during India's tour of England in 2014, along with the then-bowling coach Bharat Arun. While Arun's contract was not renewed after the ICC World T20 last year, Bangar and Sridhar were retained.
