After a disastrous Test series against England, the BCCI have made major changes to its backroom staff for the ODI series.

While Duncan Fletcher will continue as the head coach, the board has made substantial changes to the rest of the coaching staff.

A BCCI statement said: "In their continuing efforts to re-energise the support to the team, the BCCI has given a break to the bowling coach Mr. Joe Dawes and the fielding coach, Mr. Trevor Penney, for the one-day series, and appointed Mr. Sanjay Bangar, former Indian all-rounder, and former India fast bowler Mr. Bharat Arun as the Asst. coaches of the team. Mr. R. Sridhar will join the support team as the fielding coach for the one-day series."

India had to make some changes after a dismal performance in the recently concluded Test series. India were thoroughly outclassed in all the three departments - batting, bowling and fielding. The batsmen kept committing the same mistakes, the slip fielding was poor and there were as many as ten dropped catches in the slip cordon and gully region.

The field placements were not up to the mark as many edges fell short of the slip cordon. A fresh approach was needed and hopefully the men in the new set-up can bring in new ideas and iron out the flaws in the system that brought about India's downfall in the Tests.

The BCCI did not make clear how responsibilities would be split between Shastri and Fletcher but the move indicates that the coaching staff is under scrutiny and there future with the India team is far from assured.

The 52-year-old Shastri played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India scoring 3830 and 3108 runs respectively. He also has 151 Test and 129 ODI wickets.

Sanjay Bangar had a successful campaign as the head coach Kings XI Punjab in the recently concluded edition of the Indian Premier League and he will bring a lot to the table with his vast domestic experience.

Sridhar, the former Hyderabad left-arm spinner, was an assistant coach with the India Under-19 team during the 2014 World Cup in February in the UAE. He was also the fielding coach for Kings XI Punjab in the 2014 IPL and it is possible that he was picked because he worked successfully alongside Bangar this season, so the pair have an established rapport.

Arun, who played two Tests for India in the 1980s, was the head coach of India's Under-19 World Cup winning side in 2012.

Both Sridhar and Arun have also had stints on the coaching staff at the National Cricket Academy.
