German champions Bayern Munich have confirmed the transfer of midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United. The club confirmed the move in a press conference today, with CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge telling the media that the World Cup winner wanted to do something new at the end of his career and had asked Munich to meet his wishes. Schweinsteiger made his Bayern Munich debut in 2002 and has played 536 times for the powerhouse side and only had another year left on his contract. It is believed that Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal had earmarker Schweinsteiger as a target pretty early and also had Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin in his sights if the deal with Bayern had fallen through. Schweinsteiger is 30-years-old and with United’s other defensive playmaker Michael Carrick already 33, will certainly become a vital cog as the Red Devils aim to return to the top after two below par seasons.
