Lakshya Sen made a winning start on his Olympic debut, beating five-time Olympian Kevin Cordon of Guatemala in the men’s singles Group L Match. However, that result has been deleted. The match result has become inconsequential because Cordon, who lost 21-8, 22-10 to the World No. 18 Sen, has now pulled out of the Paris Olympics due to a left elbow injury.

“Guatemalan men’s singles player Kevin Cordon has withdrawn from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Badminton Competition due to a left elbow injury,” the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said in an update on Sunday.

“His remaining Group L matches against Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie (Court 2, 2pm local time, 29 July 2024) and Julien Carraggi of Belgium (Court 3, ‘Not Before’ 9.20am local time, 31 July 2024) will not be played. Matches on these courts in each respective session have been rescheduled.”

“As per BWF General Competition Regulations for group stage play, the results of all matches played, or yet to be played, involving Cordon in Group L are now considered deleted,” BWF added.

This means Group L is now a three-player group and not a four-player group. Apart from Sen, the other players are Jonatan Christie of Indonesia and Julien Carraggi of Belgium.

Paris Olympics: News, schedule, medals tally and more

The interesting bit here is that the 22-year-old Indian will be the only player in the group to have played three matches, however, only two results will be counted. The other two will compete in only two matches.

Also, Sen is scheduled to face Carraggi on Monday and Christie in his final group match on Wednesday.

How Sen can qualify for the next round?

In men’s singles, only one player can qualify from the group and Group L currently has three players in which Christie has already won a match over Carraggi. If Sen beats Carraggi on Monday then the Belgian will be out. The winner between Sen and Christie will qualify for Round of 16.
