PV Sindhu conceded a defeat at the hands of South Korea’s defending champion An Se Young to exit the All England Championships from the second round in Birmingham on Thursday. Despite securing a 4-1 lead, the Indian shuttler failed to carry forward her momentum and eventually lost 19-21, 11-21 in the 42-minute women’s singles fixture. Following the defeat, Sindhu acknowledged the need to work on her errors and come back stronger.
“Well I think I should have done a bit more better, the first game was pretty good I was giving away two or three points but then I was coming close but in the second game I gave her a huge lead there were a lot of unforced errors. I need to work on my mistakes and come back stronger," Sindhu said.
Sindhu admitted that she allowed Young to gain a healthy lead in the second set. Sindhu also felt that she should have been more patient during the fixture. “She is, of course, the top player now. But I should have been much more patient, I made unforced errors. There were easy mistakes. You know, in the first game it was fine but then I was coming closer. But I think in the second set I gave her a huge lead, and then I was making receiving mistakes," she added.
The defeat to Young marked Sindhu’s seventh successive loss against the South Korean shuttler. In 2023, Young became the very first Korean woman singles player to clinch the World Championships. She has already claimed victories in Malaysia and France this season. Sindhu’s defeat at the All England Championships also brought an end to India’s campaign in women’s singles.
Earlier this year, Sindhu lost in the quarterfinal at the French Open Super 750 badminton tournament, held in Paris. Sindhu, who was making a comeback following a four-month-long injury hiatus, conceded a 24-22, 17-21, 18-21 defeat against the second seed and defending champion Chen Yu Fei. The match turned out to be quite a thrilling one with Sindhu eventually falling short after an epic series of performances for one hour and 32 minutes.
