Indian shuttlers including two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy have been given favourable groups in the upcoming Paris Games.
Sindhu, who had won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics followed by bronze in Tokyo 2020, will face Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba as well as Maldives’ Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq, who are ranked 75th and 111th respectively in Group M of the women’s singles event.
Prannoy, who makes his Olympic debut in Paris, faces Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat and Germany’s Fabian Roth, ranked 70th and 82nd respectively in Group K in the men’s singles section.
Sen, however, faces a stiff challenge in the form of third seed Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in Group L. Besides Christie, Sen faces Guatemala’s Kevin Gordon and Belgium’s Julien Caraggi.

The women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa, meanwhile, find themselves in Group C alongside Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida as well as Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong. Australia’s Setyana Mepasa and Angela Yu are also part of their group.
However, celebrated men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are yet to find out about their Olympic group, with world governing body for badminton BWF having postponed it for a later date.
“Following a Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) hearing, BWF will conduct the men’s doubles draw on another date yet to be determined,” said the BWF shortly before unveiling the draw for other categories at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The badminton event gets underway on 27 July, a day after the opening ceremony, with medal matches taking place between 2 and 5 August.
