The 2025 season of Formula 1 will start this weekend at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia. With Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari and six of the 20 drivers starting their first full seasons, the F1 2025 season has much to look forward to.
However, the opening race in Australia could become a victim of rain and other adverse weather conditions. The race is scheduled to start at 3 PM local, which means it could be dusk by the time it ends, impacting visibility.
Australian GP faces rainfall and humidity threat
On 14 February (Friday), the day of the first two practice session, the FP1 and FP2 are scheduled at 12.30 PM and 4:00 PM local time, respectively, there’s minimal rain threaty at 7% but temperature is ecpetd to be as high as 28 degrees Celsius and the humidity can touch upto 70%. With a predicted south-southwest wind at 5-10 mph, driving can get tricky at times.
On Saturday, March 15, temperatures are set to rise significantly, reaching a high of 37°C during FP3 and qualifying. Humidity levels will drop to between 37% and 43%, providing some relief. However, the chance of rainfall increases from 3% during the day to 21% in the evening, potentially impacting the final stages of qualifying, which ends at 5 PM local time.
Sunday, March 16, is set to deliver the most challenging race day conditions. With an 80% chance of rain and westerly winds gusting between 10-20 mph, teams may need to adapt their strategies on the fly. Temperatures will peak at a mild 25°C, while humidity levels are expected to range from 63% to 72%. As the sun sets around 7:30 pm, any delays or red flags could lead to reduced visibility, adding another layer of complexity to the race.
While these are challenging conditions, no Formula 1 race has ever been easy. The drivers and the teams will be ready to make a mark in the opening race, which will also serve as a good test to check the team combination and cohesiveness as multiple new pairings are set to dominate the grid.
