Aus v Ind, first Test day 2 as it happened: Clarke, Smith help Australia pile up 517/7
December 10, 2014, 13:21:09 (IST)
STUMPS!!!! Well, bad light has forced early stumps on day 2. Play will start half an hour early tomorrow and the rest of the days to compensate for lost overs.
December 10, 2014, 12:59:29 (IST)
And the players are again off – This time due to bad light!!!
December 10, 2014, 12:56:18 (IST)

OUT! Finally, India manage to get a wicket! M Clarke c Pujara b KV Sharma 128 (244m 163b 18×4 0x6)

Loopy and full on off from round the wicket, Clarke gets down and goes for a slog sweep, doesn’t connect it well and helps it straight into the hands of Pujara at square leg. He gets a rousing applause as he walks back to the pavilion. What a gutsy innings from the skipper. Smith was dropped at deep square leg off the earlier delivery by Ishant Sharma. ….

Mitchell Johnson is the new batsman.

December 10, 2014, 12:49:04 (IST)
The signs of wearing are clearly visible as Ishant Sharma bowls a rubbish ball way outside the leg stump and it runs away for five wides. Clarke then charges down the track to Karn and flicks it beautifully through mid-wicket for a boundary. The negative line bowling has restricted the run flow but still, Australians are managing to get that odd boundary.

After 115 overs, Australia 487/6 (Clarke 115*, Smith 150*)
December 10, 2014, 12:36:44 (IST)
India have resorted to a negative line, Karn and Shami are bowling from round the wicket. The Australians are finding it difficult to get the momentum going. Just 14 runs off the four overs after the break….. MeanWhile, Smith has reached his 150. This has been a classy knock from him……

Right then! The players have made their way out to the middle. Karn will start off proceedings. Clarke and Smith would be looking to pick up from where they left off.

Well, Well, this is frustrating, the rain is back again and the players are going off……..another delay
December 10, 2014, 11:08:29 (IST)
The Indian heads are dropping now. It’s Saha who commits a cardinal sin. Misses the stumping of Smith. Poor Karn Sharma! Smith dances down the track and looks to whip across the line but is beaten by the away turn. Saha fumbles which gives Smith the time to get back in. Smith is unstoppable right now, he cleverly guides one through the gap between slip cordon and gully off Shami and then crashes it over extra cover for a powerful boundary. Clarke joins the party, he backs away and cuts it wide of gully for another boundary.

After a tight over from Karn, Smith is at it again off Aaro over as he clears his front leg and absolutely smashes it with a slap over mid on. Clarke then has a word with him, Smith heaves the next one over mid-wicket for another boundary. He misses his wild swing off the next ball. Australia clearly looking for decleration here. Smith pulls a fierce bouncer to fine leg for a couple. The penultimate delivery is delivered at 144kph, Smth slaps it at double the speed over the bowler and umpire’s head for another boundary. The last delivery is a full toss but it’s flicked to deep mid-wicket for just a single. 15 runs off the over. This is riveting stuff from Australia.
December 10, 2014, 10:50:06 (IST)
Smith looking to attack now. He at first looks to crack it through covers off Aaron but doesn’t time it well, gets a couple but then absolutely plunders one straight back, Aaron looks to take evasive action and it flicks his hand and races away to the fence. Surprisingly, Smith apologises to Aaron, he was concerned there…….
December 10, 2014, 10:46:51 (IST)
There you go! The skipper – Michael Clarke – gets to his 28th Test century. A gutsy knock from the skipper. Muted celebrations from him as he kisses his helmet and raises his bat. Brilliant stuff. He’s been torubled with that bad back and still comes out and hits a century, what a tribute to Hughes! The runs keep flowing as Karn drops it short and Smith hammers it through point for a boundary.
December 10, 2014, 10:41:18 (IST)
Vijay nearly strikes after the break. A tad flatter on off, Smith looks to defend but gets an outside edge which falls short of the first slip fielder.
December 10, 2014, 10:32:20 (IST)
Right then! We are back. Play set to resume and Vijay will complete the over.

December 10, 2014, 08:44:59 (IST)
Clarke taking on the young leg spinner Karn Sharma. Three boundaries in the over. He takes a single to mid off off the first ball of the over and there is a standing ovation as the score moves on to 408! Another tribute to Hughes. The Australian skipper then dances down the track and lofts it over Karn’s head for a boundary. He then looks to go over the top again but gets an outside edge wide of the first slip fielder for three. Karn drops it short the last ball and Clarke cuts it through point for another boundary to make it 14 from the over.

That’s it! Smith gets to his century with a couple to deep square leg. He straightaway walks towards the ‘408’ painted on the ground and raises his bat to the heavens to salute Hughes. He then goes on and hugs Clarke and breathes a huge sigh of relief, the pain is palpable on his face. Emotional scenes at the Adelaide Oval!

Good news as play resumes. Aaron will start off proceedings after the break. Smith is on 98!

Well, just as the players were about to get out to the middle after the lunch break, it started raining again……..A bit more delay.
December 10, 2014, 07:27:47 (IST)

At lunch on day 2, Australia 405/6 (Smith 98*, Clarke 85*)

A session that went Australia’s way and they have moved into a strong position now. Clarke surprised everyone as he came out to bat this morning, he struggled early on especially while pulling short balls but then got into the groove and played some intelligent strokes. Smith looked all at ease and played some delightful strokes. He closes in on a century and is just two runs away while Clarke is 15 runs away from his ton. The Indian bowlers bowled a lot of ‘hit me’ balls and they would be looking to up the ante after the break.

Well, it started raining again and they have taken EARLY LUNCH.

After 100 overs, Australia 400/6 (Clarke 85*, Smith 93*)
December 10, 2014, 06:33:50 (IST)
India continue the ‘first ball four’ tradition this morning as Aaron drifts it on Smith’s pads who nudges it to fine leg for a boundary. Easy runs these. Aaron then drops it short on off, Clarke stays back and just cuts it over gully for a superb boundary. He was in full control there. 400 up for Australia. Australia have scored 46 runs in the 10 overs this morning. They haven’t been troubled an inch!
December 10, 2014, 06:30:05 (IST)
It’s pretty gloomy out in the middle………there is a slight drizzle too and the lights are on….

Day 1 report: David Warner paid moving tribute to Phillip Hughes in compiling a brilliant century, but Australia’s joy was tempered with another injury to captain Michael Clarke on an emotional opening day of the first test against India on Tuesday. [caption id=“attachment_1842913” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Michael Clarke is congratulated by Steven Smith as he reaches his century during day two of the First Test. Getty Michael Clarke is congratulated by Steven Smith as he reaches his century during day two of the First Test. Getty[/caption] Warner’s sparkling 145 from 163 balls got the hosts off to a flying start at a sun-drenched Adelaide Oval, and though India captured a flurry of late wickets, Steven Smith added an unbeaten 72 after tea to push Australia to 354-6 at stumps. A day that began solemnly with a slew of tributes to Hughes ended with grave concerns over the fitness of Clarke, who retired hurt on 60 with a lower back injury. Reuters
