Shweta Chaudhry shot the first medal for India in the 2014 Asian Games after she won the bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range on Saturday. Shweta shot a total of 176.4 in the final to clinch the bronze medal while the silver went to South Korean Jung Jeehae (201.3) and China’s Zhang Mengyuan (202.2) won the gold. Shweta had to beat China’a Zhou in a shoot-off for third place, but then shot 8.6 with her next shot to drop out of reckoning for the silver. Shweta had qualified for the final with a total of 383. She was the fourth best qualifier behind K Jangmi (Kor), J Jeehae (Kor), G Wenjun (Chn), who all shot 384. India’s other shooters Henna Sindhu (378) and CWG silver medallist Malaika Goel (373) finished 13th and 24th respectively. Shweta’s progression through series: After first series: Chaudhary is leading (10.8, 10.7 and 9.3 – total 30.8) After second series: Chaudhary is still leading (total: 60.8) After third series: Chaudhary has dropped to sixth (total: 77.8) After fourth series: Chaudhary moved into third (total: 97.8) After fifth series: Chaudhary moved into joint third (total: 117.7) After sixth series: Chaudhary moved into third (total: 138.3) After seventh series: Chaudhary was assured of a bronze but she had to beat China’s Zhou in a shoot-off. She looked good to clinch it but shot 8.4 with her second shot of the seventh series to go into the shoot-off. However, in the shoot-off, she shot 10.7 to assure herself of a bronze. (total: 157.3) After eighth series: Chaudhary settled for a bronze with a total of 176.4. After ninth series: China’s Zhang clinched gold with 202.2 and Korea’s Jung took the silver with 201.3.
