India vs Pakistan in the men’s hockey pool B match 15th (end of match): India 1-2 Pakistan. Pakistan were the better team today and deserved to win. India got their act together – a number of near misses in the early going – in the fourth quarter but they couldn’t hold Pakistan back. 8th minute: GOAL! Mohd Waqas gets a goal to put Pakistan ahead again. He trapped it well and hit it on the turn to beat the Indian goalkeeper. He was left unmarked in the D though. Bad defending. India 1-2 Pakistan. 7th minute: GOAL! Nikkin gets the goal for India. Nice cross in and Nikkin was waiting to tap it in. India have played superbly in the final quarter. If only they had played like this from the start. Everything to play for now. India 1-1 Pakistan. 3rd minute: India go really close. SV Sunil’s flick from within the circle was going towards goal but well saved by the keeper. Pakistan 1-0 India. 1st minute: 15 minutes for India to get a goal. They haven’t looked like scoring but this is an invitation to go all and attack. 4th quarter begins 15 mins (end of third quarter): A 2-min break now. Pakistan have gone on the defence now. They are looking to defend the lead with everything they have got. India need to go full tilt now or they might run in South Korea earlier then they would like. 7th minute: Goal mouth scramble and Pakistan have the goal. Mohd Umar has been credited with the goal, India’s defenders tried to clear but he managed to sneak it in. Pakistan 1-0 India. 3rd quarter begins 15th mins (end of 2nd quarter): India 0-0 Pakistan. Pakistan have looked better but no goals. India can still steal this one away. 7th minute: Waqas had a clear chance – one on one with the keeper and he missed the target. It’s still 0-0. But that was very dangerous. Pakistan’s movement and pace is much faster than that of India. 6th minute: India have a PC. Dharamveer inserted it but Raghunath’s power is waster – it is straight at the goalie. No direction. The Pakistan goalkeeper is down again – he is rubbing his chest in pain. 5 mins: Still no goals. Pakistan are finding the spaces but they have been unable to do anything threatening thereafter. 2nd minute: Akashdeep has a good chance but hits it straight on to the Pakistan goalkeepers arm. The Pakistan keeper stays down after the hit but no goal for India. India 0-0 Pakistan. 2nd quarter begins 15 mins (end of 1st quarter): India and Pakistan are still locked at 0-0. Pakistan have had the better chances but India have somehow managed to hold on. 13 mins: Pakistan’s Abdul Haseem looked like he was clear but a desperate tackle prevented him from getting his shot off. 10 minutes: Still no goals. Both teams still experimenting with the odd long-ball. This isn’t end-to-end stuff… not yet. 7th minute: India get their first PC but it is hit straight at the Pakistan keeper. Easy save. Still 0-0. 6th min: First PC to Pakistan. India messed it up but Pakistan were unable to convert. 5 mins into the 1st quarter: It’s still 0-0. Both teams testing each other out. The match has begun. No matter how the respective coaches plan tactically, I have found that the game invariably ends in an end-to-end attacking battle and many of the games are drawn or have just a goal in it. I expect nothing different this time. Day five roundup The strong shooting squad, which had accounted for the bulk of medal collection so far, drew a blank today which led to India dropping one place in the medal table. With the addition of just one bronze today, India took their tally to 12 (1 gold, 1 silver, 10 bronze). Powerhouse China continued to lead the pack with 99 medals (50-25-24) followed by hosts South Korea with 70 medals (24-23-23) and Japan (64 = 18-23-23). Early in the day, Dushyant, hailing from Haryana and belonging to the Bengal Engineering Group in Roorkie, led from the 500m till the last 200m in the 2000m race before strong northerly winds and rain put paid to his gold medal hopes as he fell behind two others and finished third by clocking 7:26.57. [caption id=“attachment_1728781” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Joydeep Karmakar couldn’t qualify for the finals. AFP Joydeep Karmakar couldn’t qualify for the finals. AFP[/caption] He not only lost the gold medal, but also the silver as the host country’s Lee Hakbeom, who was third with 500m left, also surged past the Indian rower to clinch the second spot in 7:25.95. It was the first medal of the day after a fruitless stint at the shooting range for India and the 10th bronze in the Games. After scooping six medals, including a gold won by Jitu Rai, on the first four days of the Asian Games, Indian shooters misfired at the Ongnyeon pistol and rifle range. India had chances of winning four medals from the 25m rapid fire pistol event for men and the 50m rifle prone for women but could not get even one on a disappointing day. Indian men’s 25m rapid fire pistol team narrowly missed out on a bronze as they finished fourth after ending up with same points as Vietnam with a tally of 1704. The bronze was decided on ‘innner 10’ count and Vietnam bagged the medal as they had 41 hits at the innermost ring as against 39 by the Indians. In badminton, sixth seed Saina easily overcame U Teng Lok of Macau 21-10, 21-8 in just 20 minutes and lined up against her next opponent Iran’s Soraya Aghaeihajiagha, who dispatched Mongolia’s Khulangoo Baatar in straight games in another round of 32 women’s singles encounter. Sindhu, seeded 8th, too had a comfortable 21-7, 21-13 first round victory in 19 minutes over Wong Kit Leng, also of Macau, to book a round of 16 clash against M Bellaetrix of Indonesia, a contest the lanky Hyderabadi described as “tricky”. In the boxing ring, comeback-man Akhil pummelled his Nepalese rival Purna Bahadur Lama before notching up a Technical Knockout triumph while Shiva merely had to show up to enter the second round as Indian boxers began their Asian Games campaign on a winning note. In squash, India took a big step towards winning another squash medal at the Incheon Asian Games after the women’s team, including Joshana Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal, upset Hong Kong 2-1 before beating Pakistan 3-0 in Pool B today. Deepika Kumari, India’s best bet in women’s archery also showed good form to come up as the eighth best in the ranking round of the women’s individual recurve event at the Gyeyang Asiad Archery Field here. She will now will take on Uzbekistan’s Munira Nurmanova in the pre-quarter final elimination round on September 26. However, the Indian men’s basketball team crashed out after losing to Iran in a preliminary round match. The Indian team lost 41-76, their second consecutive defeat in preliminary round Group E, to make an exit from the tournament. On the tennis court, Natasha Palha crashed out of the women’s singles event following a straight sets defeat but the combo of Shweta Rana and Rishika Sunkara made a bright start for India in women’s doubles, recording an easy win over Pakistan’s Sara Mansoor and Ushna Suhail. There was disappointment in sepaktakraw as both the Indian men’s and women’s teams suffered their second consecutive defeats leaving them with little chance of advancing to the next round. Both the men’s and women’s teams suffered an identical 0-3 thrashing at the hands of defending champions Thailand in the preliminary round matches at the Bucheon Gymnasium Court here. However, the Indian men’s volleyball team hardly broke a sweat as it thrashed unfancied Maldives 25-10 25-19 25-17 in exactly an hour to enter the quarterfinal. (via PTI)
