India got off to a remarkable start at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships with a total of seven medals at the end of the first day.
Long distance runner (5000 m) G Lakshmanan and shot putter Manpreet Kaur were the gold medallists on a day that saw India’s athletes win one silver and four bronze medals. India won both the silver and bronze in the women’s long jump courtesy V Neena and Nayan James.

However, in the men’s discus throw, Vikas Gowda failed to defend his title, but grabbed a bronze. The day rounded off with javelin thrower Annu Rani adding a bronze to the Indian medal tally.
