Ashes nightmare: Stats from Australia's Trent Bridge capitulation

Australia were dismissed for just 60 by England in the first innings of the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge on Thursday, with Stuart Broad taking a personal Test-best eight for 15. Below AFP Sport examines some of the key statistics thrown up by an extraordinary session of play: 1 - Number of England bowlers with better figures in an Ashes innings than Broad’s haul. Off-spinner Jim Laker took nine for 37 and 10 for 53 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1956. 3 - Number of balls Broad needed to take his first wicket Thursday. Getty[/caption] 4 - Number of times a Test team has bowled first and been batting by lunch on the first day. 5 - Number of England bowlers who have now taken 300 Test wickets. Broad’s first wicket Thursday saw him join James Anderson, Ian Botham, Bob Willis and Fred Trueman as the only England players to have achieved the feat. 12 - Total number of balls faced by Australia’s top four. 13 - Highest partnership of Australia’s innings, achieved for both the eighth and last wickets. England openers Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth had equalled it in three overs before lunch. 14 - Total number of extras in Australia’s innings and their top score – the first time in an Ashes innings that extras have been the top-scorer. 17 - Years since an England bowler last took eight wickets in an innings (Angus Fraser eight for 53 against the West Indies at Port of Spain). 18.3 - Overs bowled in Australia’s innings – the shortest completed first innings in Test history. 19 - Number of deliveries Broad needed to take five wickets, the equal quickest in Test history along with Australia’s Ernie Toshack against India at Brisbane in 1947. 25 - The previous record for the fewest number of balls required to take five wickers at the start of a Test innings set by South Africa’s Vernon Philander against New Zealand at Cape Town in 2013. 46 - Number of innings it needed for Chris Rogers to suffer his first duck in Test cricket when he edged Broad to England captain Cook at first slip on Thursday. 67 - Years since either side made a lower score in a completed Ashes innings (England 52 all out at The Oval in 1948). 79 - Years since Australia were dismissed for a lower score in a Test innings by England (58 all out at Brisbane in 1936). 94 - Minutes it took for Australia’s innings to be completed. 307 - Broad’s new total number of Test wickets saw him draw level with the career tally of England fast-bowling great Trueman.
