The high point of the England innings was a 173 run fourth wicket stand between Root and Jonny Bairstow (74; 105b, 12x4) that guided the hosts to the drivers’ seat. Put into bat, Australia, folded up in a shade over 90 minutes, with the highest contribution (14) coming from the extras and nine of the batsmen managing only single digit scores.
