Ahmedabad to get five new stadiums with an eye on 2036 Olympics: Report

Ahmedabad, which recently hosted the 2023 ODI World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, is gearing up to develop more stadiums of international standards in the city. As per a report, a new football stadium of Olympic standard and four more stadiums will be built in Ahmedabad. The news of new stadiums can be linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement during the IOC Session in Mumbai in October that India wants to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. As per a report in the Times of India, the central and Gujarat state governments have approved the construction of five new stadiums and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) will be issuing the tender for their construction. “The SVP Enclave will be an important cornerstone in making India a global sporting hub. The enclave is one-of-its-kind and at par with the global standards,” a source told Times of India. The five stadiums will be part of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave which is being built around the Narendra Modi Stadium. The sports enclave will reportedly be 350 acres big and will be situated along the Sabarmati riverfront. The sports enclave will include a 50,000 capacity football stadium, one aquatics centre of 12,000 capacity, one tennis centre with 10,000 capacity and two indoor arenas with capacities 18,000 and 10,000 each. Apart from the new stadiums, the sports enclave will also have empty spaces over which temporary venues can be set up for new events. “Gujarat Olympic Planning and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (GOLYMPIC) has begun the process of detailed design and implementation with a plan to commence construction of the enclave by October 2024 and expected completion by October 2027,” the source added.
