The year 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most important years in modern sports history. Several major changes and debut events are scheduled to take place across football, cricket, athletics, combat sports and the Olympics. Many of these developments are not just new tournaments or venues, but big structural shifts.

From the biggest-ever FIFA World Cup to landmark moments for women’s sport and long-awaited reforms in India’s national sports system, 2026 is going to see many firsts in sports. Here are eight major sporting firsts that will make 2026 a truly special year for global sports and their fans.

1. First 48-team FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, expanding from the traditional 32-team format. This change means more matches, more players and more nations getting a chance to compete on football’s biggest stage. Smaller and emerging football countries will benefit the most, as qualification becomes more accessible.

2. First World Cup hosted by three nations

For the first time in history, the men’s FIFA World Cup 2026 will be hosted by three countries - the United States, Canada and Mexico. Hosting duties will be spread across multiple cities and time zones, something never attempted on this scale before by the global football body.

3. First women’s Test match at Lord’s

Lord’s Cricket Ground, famously known as the ‘Home of Cricket’, will host its first-ever women’s Test match in 2026. This is a landmark moment for women’s cricket, especially in the longest format of the game, which has often been sidelined. The first-ever match will be played between hosts England and India in July.

4. First 12-team Women’s T20 World Cup

The Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in England and Wales this year, will expand to 12 teams for the first time, marking a major step in the growth of the women’s game. The expansion allows more associate and emerging nations to compete at the top level. Earlier, only 10 teams competed in the marquee event.

5. Olympic debut of ski mountaineering

Ski mountaineering, also known as ‘skimo’, will make its Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The discipline involves athletes climbing snow-covered mountains using skis and then racing downhill at high speed. This is the first time it will be included as an official medal event in the Olympics.

6. First National Sports Governance Act in India

The National Sports Governance Act has partially come into effect. The Act, which was notified on August 18 last year, has been described by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya as the biggest reform in Indian sport so far. The process to set up the National Sports Board (NSB) and the National Sports Tribunal (NST) has officially begun. A National Sports Election Panel will also be created to conduct and supervise elections of sports federations and other recognised bodies.

7. UFC event at the White House

In an unprecedented moment, the UFC is expected to stage an event at the White House. Combat sports have never before been associated with such a high-profile political setting. While details are still evolving, reports suggest a fight will take place on June 14 on the South Lawn of the White House. The event was first announced by President Donald Trump himself in July last year.

8. Inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship

World Athletics will launch the Ultimate Championship in 2026, a new elite competition aimed at showcasing the world’s best track and field athletes. The event is designed to be high-profile and commercially attractive, with top athletes competing in a compact, high-stakes format. It is part of World Athletics’ effort to modernise the sport and keep audiences engaged beyond the Olympic cycle.
