British police have arrested a 17-year-old for an abusive tweet directed at diver Thomas Daley after he failed to obtain a medal in the synchronized diving event. Before the event, Daley had said he would like to win a medal for his father who had died of brain cancer a year earlier. Daley and his partner finished just outside the medal position however, which led to Twitter user @rileyy_69 sending him a tweet saying, “You let your dad down i hope you know that.” [caption id=“attachment_400115” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Daley dives at the Synchronized final: AP[/caption] Daley immediately retweeted the offending message, which was also followed up by a series of abuses and threats including calling him an “over hyped p$#ck” The messages understandably generated massive outrage on Twitter, leading to some users starting up a viral campaign to get him kicked off Twitter. The teenager, suddenly alarmed by all the hate attempted to apologize to Daley afterwards, saying “please i don’t want to be hated I’m just sorry you didn’t win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all prude so just upset” Too late though. British site ibtimes reported that police had arrested the teenager at a guest house in the Weymouth area of Dorset. In Britain, tweeting messages considered menacing, offensive or indecent can lead to prosecution. This is a chronology of tweets:
