How Nyoma airfield in Ladakh marks a military aviation milestone for India
India has fully operationalised the Nyoma airbase in Ladakh, transforming it from a basic landing strip into the world’s highest fighter-capable airbase at 13,700 feet. Strategically located just 35 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, Nyoma offers an ideal valley for fighter operations, adding a major airhead that drastically reduces reaction times. Equipped with a 2.7 km paved runway, hangars, and air traffic control, it supports Su-30 MKI and transport aircraft like C-17 and IL-76. The base enhances India’s aerial deterrence, surveillance, and rapid troop deployment along the sensitive Himalayan border, marking a key military aviation milestone.
