Why Indian Navy must safeguard Oman’s maritime interests
India’s growing role in the Indian Ocean is crucial as the United States retrenches and China’s assertiveness intensifies. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Oman and the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement deepened India-Oman relations, promoting trade, investment, and strategic cooperation. Oman’s moderation and neutral stance complement India’s interests, but regional threats, including Chinese fishing incursions and Houthi attacks, highlight the need for maritime security. The Indian Navy and coast guard partnerships with Oman and Yemen could safeguard trade routes, ensure sustainable resource management, and counter destabilising influences, reinforcing India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean and promoting regional stability.
