Dharmendra: An everyman superstar trapped in his own ‘He‑Man’ image
Dharmendra, widely adored as Bollywood’s “everyman” or “aam aadmi” superstar, found his legacy complicated by the very “He‑Man” persona that elevated him. While his rugged, action-hero image captured the popular imagination, it also boxed him into a narrow stereotype. As 1980s cinema shifted toward macho action films, that persona grew deeper roots, overshadowing the nuanced, versatile roles he played earlier—from the introspective Jat in Satyakam to playful comedies like Chupke Chupke. Although his humility and relatability made him a mass favorite, they may also have limited how seriously critics and award bodies acknowledged his talent.
