Canada summons OpenAI over failure to report mass shooter’s suspicious ChatGPT activity
Canada summoned OpenAI leaders to Ottawa after the company failed to alert police about suspicious ChatGPT activity linked to a mass shooting by Jesse Van Rootselaar. Minister Evan Solomon called OpenAI's decision "very disturbing" and warned that regulatory action is possible. OpenAI stated it banned the account in June 2025 and later shared information with police, but said the activity did not meet its threshold for immediate reporting.
