The Supreme Court on Thursday, while transferring the Vyapam case to the CBI, issued notices to Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav. He is alleged to be involved in the questionable appointment of five persons as forest guards and the SC notice is on the grounds that he enjoyed immunity of the constitutional office he was occupying. Here are ten things we should know about him:

  1. Ram Naresh Yadav, who recently celebrated his 87th birthday, was born in a peasant family in Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh.

  2. He entered politics by joining the socialist movement and was said to be influenced by Ram Manohar Lohia. During the emergency, he was detained from June 1975 to February 1977.

  1. He was initially in the Janata party, during which he had his chief ministerial stint. He later joined the Congress.

  2. Yadav was the tenth chief minister of UP from June 1977 to February 1979.

  3. Yadav was sworn in as governor of Madhya Pradesh on 26th August 2011.

  4. Briefly last year, he was also the governor of Chhatisgarh following the resignation of his predecessor Shekhar Dutt.

  1. Ram Naresh Yadav has recently been named by a special investigating team which is probing the Vyapam scam. The head of the SIT has said that action will be taken against him after he resigns as governor in September 2016.

  2. In March this year, his son Shailesh Yadav, an accused in the Vyapam scam was found dead in Lucknow.

  1. Veerpal Singh, another accused in the Vyapam case, had alleged that he paid Rs 3 lakhs as a bribe to Shailesh Yadav to ensure that ten candidates cleared the contractual teachers examination.

  2. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a plea seeking his removal as Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
