India has received documents on 26/11 conspirator Tahawwur Hussain Rana from the US produced in a US court in Chicago during Rana’s trial. These contain audio recordings between Rana and Headley, revealing how they conspired together in the Mumbai 26/11 attacks. The Chicago court had not taken the evidence into cognizance. The evidence will come handy against others accused in 26/11. India is likely to hand the evidence to Pakistan to help bolster its case. Headley’s plea bargain ensures that he won’t be handed over to any other country. Rana has already been acquitted so it will be very difficult for the US to explain to the Chicago court why an acquitted person is being extradited to India. Thus while the new documents might add to India’s case against Rana and Headley, it will be very difficult to try them in Indian courts. The evidence includes papers, audio conversations, mobile phone records and personal diaries.
