UP Election Results: SP set to romp home on own steam

The Samajwadi Party is set to form the government without any support from the Congress and the RLD. The latest lead trend suggests that the party would manage around 195 seats on its own. It can easily secure the support of independents to touch the half-way mark of 202. The Peace Party has already extended conditional support to the SP. It spells bad news for the Congress. It gets to play no role in the formation of the government. It means it loses all bargaining strength with the party that rules the state – the SP in this case. Its plans leverage its support here for the stability of the UPA at the Centre also goes for a toss. It is left with the only option left: cosy up to the BSP and get its support in Uttarakhand, which has thrown up a close verdict. It could pick and chose its partners in the state and still be in position to take free decisions at the Centre, unencumbered by the pressure of the Congress. It won’t mind if the Congress decides to support it from outside but it has no urgency to accept the latter’s offer. Poll analysts in Uttar Pradesh mention that the SP and the BJP grow and decline in the state in a synchronised fashion. Though the BJP has performed poorly in the state, it can take heart from the fact that the SP allows it scope to grow by its pro-Muslim policies. The SP’s approach causes some polarisation of Hindu votes which help the saffron party. All eyes will now be on Akhilesh Yadav. Though Mulayam Singh Yadav is set to be chief minister, he is expected to pass the baton to his son Akhilesh at some point during his tenure. The latter has done a stellar job in reviving the party, which had become infamous for goodaraj the last time round. He has given the party a modern face. He is likely to lead the party from now for all practical purposes.
