Narayan Murthy, Infosys founder and leading citizen of this country, in an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN argued for a more rational approach to the Lokpal Bill. Murthy expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that neither side —Team Anna and the Government — seemed vaguely interested in creating an environment, where they were willing to listen to each other's ideas.
He said that Anna's cause was of course of prime concern to one and all and even the government seemed committed to controlling corruption, yet what was perhaps most urgent was the need to look at lower level corruption which affected the lower and poor classes the most. "The elite of this country don't understand the enormity of petty corruption in the country," he stated.
Murthy stressed on the need to understand structural inequalities in the system which often leave the poor in the country at the mercy of corrupt lower level officials. He added that nepotism and corruption were major problems plaguing the country and thus Anna's voice had to be heard. Acknowledging, that while the bill was a necessity, yet the several versions of the Lokpal Bill, all needed discussion and debate.
He said, "I'm not criticising the Jan Lokpal Bill as it stands right now." He was arguing for exploring new technologies, new methods to curtail corruption. "If the Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Opposition say they will pass a strong Lokpal Bill, then it should be acceptable to Annaji. It is very, very important that we think deeply before we present a draft to the standing committee. This bill is in some senses about the economic freedom for the people," he said.
Murthy stressed on the need for resolving issues regarding corruption to ensure that the powerless citizens of the country don't continue to suffer due to petty corruption. The key, according to Murthy was that before the draft was presented to the Parliament, it should be thoroughly discussed and well reasoned out. Time in his opinion was required to creating a strong Lokpal to weed out corruption.
