Tuticorin: A case was registered on Tuesday against actor-turned-politician R Sarathkumar in connection with the seizure of Rs 9 lakh from his car last week in violation of election rules. He is contesting the 16 May Tamil Nadu assembly polls in an alliance with AIADMK.

The case was registered at Arumuganeri police station, Special Tahsildar P Vallikannu said.

The seizure was made on 7 May by an Election Flying Squad, during a vehicle check at Nallur Vilakku in the district. The amount was later deposited in the treasury.

Sarathkumar, chief of All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK), is the lone candidate of the party and is contesting from Tiruchendur constituency.

The case was registered against Sarathkumar under IPC section 171H (illegal payments in connection with an election) as he could not produce documents for carrying the cash, Vallikannu said.
