WikiLeaks recently released cables which show that senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy revealed details of Indira Gandhi’s health and election plans during the Emergency in 1977 to the US. The Indian Express reported that in an electronic telegram sent from Department of State (USA) to New Delhi, Swamy has been cited as the source who told a US department officer that Gandhi intended to declare elections in view of her health. AFP[/caption] The cable containing classified information, available on the WikiLeaks website, says: “Subramanian Swamy suggested to department officer ten days ago that he heard Mrs. Gandhi was prompted to set the March election date because she wanted to square things away in view of her qte failing health unqte.” The cable also cites a Newsweek week story from 1977 which claimed Gandhi had terminal cancer and the surprise election was a way to ensure the “quick succession of Sanjay in the next 60-90 days”.
