Congress, SAD members pelt stones in Ropar, says report

Workers of the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) pelted stones at each other in ward number 1 of the Ropar Municipal Council, The Times of India reported. “The clash left around a dozen workers of both the political parties injured and hospitalised,” the report said.

Congress ‘murdered’ democracy, says AAP

The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the Congress workers of indulging in booth capturing in Samana, Rajpura, Dhuri, Abohar and Bhikhiwind, a charge denied by the ruling party.

Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that an AAP volunteer was allegedly shot at in Patti by some Congress activists. However, police rejected the charge.

Cheema alleged that the democracy was “murdered” in Punjab on Sunday by the Congress and sought resignation of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

SAD calls for repolling in constituencies with ’large-scale booth capturing’

Former Punjab minister and SAD leader Daljit S Cheema said, “Despite warnings, SEC took no concrete steps to control the situation and ensure fair polling”. He also demanded “countermanding of elections at all places where there were large scale booth capturing and violent incidents,” the SAD said.

Warned SEC about Congress’ ‘unfair practices’, says SAD

In a statement released on Sunday evening, SAD spokesperson Dr Daljit Singh Cheema was quoted as saying that the SAD “had already cautioned the State Election Commission about how democracy had been murdered in the run up to the municipal elections and how Congress goons were expected to indulge in booth capturing and other unfair practices”, News18 reported.

“Despite this warning, no concrete steps were taken to control the situation and ensure free and fair elections,” he said.

SAD accuses Congress of indulging in ‘booth capturing’

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) reportedly accused the Congress of “booth-capturing” during the panchayat polls in Punjab on Sunday. News18 reported that SAD members blocked the road outside the DAV College in Bathinda.

“Congressmen indulged in booth capturing and unleashed widespread violence against opposition parties,” the SAD said.

According to News18, the voter turnout in the municipal polls in Ludhiana district till 2pm is as follows: Payal – 60.1 percent, Doraha: 57.4 percent, Samrala 51.42 percent, Jagraon 51.29 percent, Sahnewal: 50 percent, Mullanpur 49.71 percent and Khanna: 48.39 percent.

EVM snags reported in few places

According to Amar Ujala , In Ludhian’s Khanna, polling was halted at the ward number 29 due to problems in the EVM machine. According to The Tribune an EVM had developed some snag at booth number 56 and polling started there at 9.30 am.Amar Ujala had earlier too reported that voting was briefly halted at a few places in Khanna due to EVM snags. A problem had also occured in EVM machine at a booth in Mohali’s Lalru, the news paper had reported.

Late-night clash between Akalis and Congress in Muktsar: reports

The polling in Punjab’s Muktsar district began on a violent note, with senior vice president of Muktsar municipal council Yadwinder Singh Yadu, a Congress candidate from Ward 4, and his supporter Sudhir Sharma getting injured in a late night clash between Kotkapura Road on the outskirts of Muktsar town, reported News18.  According to The Tribune , Yadu received six stitches and was admitted to the local civil hospital. According to the report, Congress leader Karan Kaur Brar blamed Akalis for the violence while SAD Muktsar district president-cum-local MLA Kanwarjit Singh Rozy Barkandi claimed that Yadu was beaten up by the police.

19,000 police personnel deployed for municipal polls

The State Election Commission (SEC) has set up 4,102 polling stations, of which, 1,708 have been declared as sensitive and 861 as hyper sensitive. A voter who enters the polling station before 4 pm will have the right to vote, an SEC spokesperson told news agency PTI. Around 7,000Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been deployed for voting. As many as 19,000 police personnel have been deputed to conduct free and fair elections, the spokesperson said.

Congress accused Opposition of making ‘baseless charges’

The  Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar on Saturday accused the Opposition of making baseless allegations against the state government and claimed that they have already conceded the defeat. The Opposition parties are now trying to find an excuse, he said.  

They simply do not have any argument against the Congress Party, which is fighting elections purely on the development plank, Jakhar said in a statement, adding that due to it, the Opposition parties are making baseless charges against the state government and have already conceded the defeat.

The Akalis and the AAP had accused the Congress of misusing the government machinery to win these polls while the BJP had charged the ruling party of unleashing hooliganism under farmers’ guise.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are fighting the municipals elections  in Punjab separately after the former walked out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the farm laws issue last year. SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and other party leaders campaigned for their party candidates. The party has fielded 1,569 candidates in the civic body polls.
