He is the only one since Jawaharlal Nehru to have served as PM twice. In his farewell speech, an emotional Singh said that he had been an ‘underpriveleged child of Partition.’ He added that he was thankful to the country to have empowered him enough for him to rise and occupy the office of Prime Minister. Singh and the UPA government had faced a lot of criticism on scams like the 2G and coal scam and other charges of corruption. However, Singh, in his farewell speech, also said that his tenure had been an ‘open book.’ ‘I firmly believe that the emergence of India as a major powerhouse of the evolving global economy is an idea whose time has come. Blending tradition with modernity and unity with diversity, this nation of ours can show the way forward to the world,’ he added. IANS
