When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to television to issue an appeal for peace in Gujarat, what was curious about his background were the two images that were present. One of them was the standard Mahatma Gandhi photo, and the second was an image of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
And the second image was visibly bigger than Gandhi's.
Given the fact he was addressing the Patel community that is pressing for reservation, the significance of the photo of the 'Iron Man of India' and his role in the freedom struggle can't be ignored.
The group that is spearheading the struggle for OBC quota reservation is, incidentally, headed by the Sardar Patel Group and masks of Sardar Patel were prominently on display during the mega rally in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.
Sardar Patel had featured prominently throughout Modi's election campaign between 2013 to 2014. The 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat, which was to be of Vallabhbhai Patel, repeatedly found mention in the run up to the elections. The BJP also organised 'Run for Unity' events throughout the country to gather support for the project.
