Only govt ‘unconcerned’ about snooping allegations is that of India: Chidambaram

Amid reports that French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on the Pegasus snooping allegations, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday attacked the Centre, saying the only government that is “unconcerned” over the issue is that of India.

French President Macron has spoken to Bennett over reports that Morocco’s security forces may have used the Pegasus spyware to snoop on his cellphones.

Macron telephoned Bennett on July 22, and asked him to ensure that “the issue was being taken seriously”, Israel’s Channel 12 has reported.

Reacting to the reports, Chidambaram tweeted, “President Macron of France called PM Bennett of Israel and demanded to know full information about alleged use of Pegasus spyware to hack phones in France, including the President’s.”

RS, LS congratulate Mirabai Chanu for winning silver medal in Tokyo Olympics

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha congratulated Mirabai Chanu for the silver medal on Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics.  Mirabai Chanu ended India’s 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Olympics by clinching a silver medal in the 49kg category to open the country’s account here on Saturday.

The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg) to better Karnam Malleswari’s bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. With this, she exorcised the ghosts of the 2016 Games where she had failed to log a single legitimate lift.

“As per the Centre, farmers are very happy and those (protesting farmers) sitting outside are terrorists. But in reality, farmers’ rights are being snatched away,” the Congress leader said after driving a tractor to Parliament.
