Official's suicide: 15-day judicial custody for ex-Tamil Nadu farm minister

Chennai: Amid a major political row, former Tamil Nadu agriculture minister Agri Krishnamoorthy has been arrested in connection with the alleged suicide of a senior engineering department official S Muthukumarasamy but the opposition remained unimpressed and pressed for CBI probe.[caption id=“attachment_2185497” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Former Tamil Nadu minister Agri SS Krishnamoorthy. Image courtesy Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly website[/caption] Krishnamoorthy and Senthil, an engineering department official arrested along with the former minister, were today produced before a judge who remanded them to 15 days’ judicial custody. The former minister was summoned for questioning by CB-CID and arrested late last night, a senior CB-CID official told PTI in Chennai today. Krishnamoorthy was sacked as a minister recently in the wake of the political row over the death of Muthukumarasamy, who allegedly committed suicide 44 days back because of alleged pressure from the minister while recruiting seven drivers. Krishnamoorthy and Senthil were today taken to Tirunelveli where they were produced before judicial magistrate Senthil Kumar at his residence. They were remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody and sent to Palyamkottai central prison in Tirunelveli, the police sources said. On 20 February, Muthukurmarasamy allegedly jumped in front of a train and died. Soon after, allegations were made by opposition parties including PMK, Congress, DMK that the official killed himself ‘due to pressure’ of Krishnamoorthy and sought his arrest and a CBI probe. The death of the official snowballed into a political row prompting AIADMK to drop Krishnamurthy from the state cabinet and strip him off his party posts. Commenting on the arrest, DMK spokesman TKS Elangovan said it had come too late. He maintained that the case must be probed by CBI as the opposition party has lost faith in CB-CIB of state police. “There should a proper probe… Only CBI can bring out the truth,” he said, adding that he did not have faith in CB-CID as Krishnamoorthy was a minister in the state. A report from Tirunelveli, quoting CB-CID sources, said both Krishnamurthy and the agriculture department official Senthil were produced before Judicial Magistrate III Senthil Kumar at his residence in the town and remanded to 15 days judicial custody. They have been lodged at Palyamkottai central prison in Tirunelveli. PTI
