NCP demands implementation of Sachar Committee report

NCP, a key ally of UPA, today made a strong pitch for early implementation of the Sachar Committee and Ranganath Mishra Commission reports contending that Muslims needed “different treatment” for development. The Sharad Pawar-led party also regretted that the Prime Minister’s new 15-point programme and recommendations of the Sachar Committee have not been implemented in “letter and spirit” which was “indeed unfortunate”. Pawar, while addressing a meeting of party’s minority department, supported the draft resolution which demanded the UPA government to implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee. PTI”]  [/caption] “We need to take strong steps for the implementation of the (two) reports. Till they are not implemented, the cadre will not sit back…it is not a favour but a right,” Pawar said, adding that if no one took cognisance of NCP’s demand, the struggle will be taken to the streets. He said the fruits of development have not reached the minorities and if the situation continues, no one has the right to claim that India has fully developed. Referring to various pro-people decisions taken by then ruler of Kohlapur, Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj, in Maharashtra, the Union minister said, “The weakest needs different treatment,” and the same was correct for the minorities. The NCP’s demand assumes significance as it comes ahead of assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, due next year. In the resolution, the NCP expressed its “deep dissatisfaction” that despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s repeated emphasis on social justice, participatory democracy and inclusive development, the economic and educational status of Muslims has registered little change during his term of office."    The party also demanded constitution of Equal Opportunities Commission “without delay”.
