Gopinath Munde would have been in Maharashtra later today, returning to his home district of Beed from where he won the Lok Sabha election, defending his seat successfully against a huge effort by the NCP to unseat him. He defeated Suresh Dhus of the NCP, for whom senior NCP leaders including Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar not only campaigned but actually camped in Beed for weeks, drumming up support for their candidate.
Munde eventually won by over 1.2 lakh votes. He was scheduled to participate in a grand victory rally in Beed to celebrate the victory.
Munde was among the few BJP leaders who insisted that the party would make it past the halfway mark in the Lok Sabha on its own. Speaking to Firstpost during his election campaign, Munde said if the BJP could win 120 seats on its own without Modi as PM candidate, it would certainly reach the majority this year.
