Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today said that his party supported the Centre’s proposal of 4.5 percent sub-quota to Muslims and it should implement the Sachar Committee recommendations. “We support the 4.5 percent sub-quota to Muslims. Their condition is worse than the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as per the Sachar Committee report. In fact we want 18 percent reservation for the minorities,” Yadav said at a press conference in New Delhi.[caption id=“attachment_339640” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Supporting sub-quota. We have nothing to say on the Supreme Court’s decision,” he said. Yadav said the Centre should accept the Sachar Committee report. The Committee gave a slew of recommendations to uplift the Muslims. The high court on 28 May had held that the Centre acted in a “casual manner” in granting the 4.5 percent sub-quota to minorities, carving it out of 27 percent OBC reservation. It had said the Office Memorandum creating the sub-quota was based on religious grounds and not on any other intelligible consideration.
