Valentine’s day came late this year for two not-so-secret couples. Even as Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherji finally confirmed what everyone was claiming all along – Yes, we are indeed married! – the other set of lovebirds chose to go public on twitter.
We don’t know if it was love at first sight. Certainly both parties of this long-simmering bromance have long been playing coy. Until recently, Chetan Bhagat was issuing Bollywood-style denials, telling the Indian Express until very recently, “It will be wrong to take sides because my neutrality is my biggest trend. I don’t say go with him or not go with him. I’m just saying hear him out. Same thing I’ll say for Rahul Gandhi. I praise his speech in Jaipur.” [caption id=“attachment_1491129” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] The selfie[/caption] Anushka Sharma please take note. This is how it’s done! Modi’s secret admiration for Bhagat, on the other hand, leaked through in more subtle ways, signaled in form not content. Over and again in his speeches, Modi would channel language, themes, and cadence of a CB novel, replete with gratuitous acronyms, pandering to youngistan, and technology zindabad references. But as the time of reckoning, i.e. the Lok Sabha elections, drew near, Chetan especially grew bolder with each passing day, finally risking an appearance at one of Modi’s chai pe charchas. It marked a decisive moment when Chetan finally stopped playing the field with the likes of AAP, and declared his undivided affection for the big man from Gujarat. “He is the only leader who has presented an extensive economic agenda for India. No other leader has done so till now. I think his model of governance and economy is the best. It would create large number jobs in the country which is good for youth,” Chetan boldly declared. Sure, there was still some weak insistence that he would “support all good people,” there was little doubt about who really had Chetan’s heart. Surely then, he couldn’t have wished for a better birthday present than that loving tweet from his ultimate bro. “When the front-running PM candidate of the world’s biggest democracy remembers your birthday and posts a selfie, have to say, it feels nice,” tweeted a giddy Bhagat. Aww, that’s tho thweet, yaar! “I have always believed in fairy-tales,” said a newly married Rani Mukherji. And we can’t help but root for a fairytale ending for our other favourite couple. Meanwhile, we have this:
PS: We’re now waiting for September, when we’re expecting Chetan Bhagat to do his own rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to Narendra_ji_:
