Although dubbed as a one-man political outfit, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party is quietly roping in big names for campaigning prior to the Delhi Assembly election on 4 December. Among the big names that have supported the cause of the 10-month-old political party are former India head of the Royal Bank of Scotland Meera Sanyal and media entrepreneur and former CEO of Star TV, Sameer Nair.
“I am meeting people in areas such as East of Kailash and Chirag Dilli. Some people identify with my ideas, some don’t. But that’s okay,” Sanyal was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times .
The former banker, who is now campaining for AAP, had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the south Mumbai seat as an independent candidate. Sanyal plans to fight the general elections again in 2014.
Nair’s entry into AAP had been mainly because of the party’s style of functioning, its ideologies and his admiration for Arvind Kejriwal.
“What I like in Arvind is that he and his colleagues talk of clean candidates and zero-tolerance to corruption. Such commitments make a big difference. Thanks to our political class, such people have become rare,” Nair told Hindustan Times .
Admitting that he is helping the party with his 20 years of experience in the media, Nair hopes that a similar people’s movement will happen in his parent city of Mumbai.
