Maria Susairaj out of jail, but Jerome not so lucky

Mumbai: Kannada actress Maria Susairaj, sentenced to three-year jail term in the Neeraj Grover murder case, on Saturday walked free from the Mumbai’s Byculla Jail. Susairaj was sentenced to three years in jail Friday by a Mumbai court for destroying evidence in the Grover murder case. Since she had already served more than three years as an undertrial, she was ordered to be released once she had paid the compensation amount of Rs 50,000 to the victim’s family. A Mumbai session court on Friday sentenced her boyfriend Emile Jerome, a Navy lieutenant, to 10 years in prison. The court’s judgment came a day after it held that the killing of Neeraj Grover was not an act of premeditated murder and absolved Maria Susairaj and Emile Jerome of the murder charge. Susairaj has been convicted for destruction of evidence under Indian Penal Code Section 201, while Jerome has been convicted for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (Part 1). The prosecution, however, failed to prove intent to murder for Jerome. The duo was arrested in May 2008 for Grover’s brutal murder. Agencies
