Shah, while addressing the election rally for BJP candidate Y Khemchand at Yumnam Leikai asked voters to vote for BJP for corruption-free governance.

Taking a dig at Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, Shah said that 1.51 tons of rice given by the Centre never reached beneficiaries and alleged that there was a lack of transparency in almost all the state-sponsored schemes by the Centre. “We asked Ibobi to give an account of all the development programmes sanctioned by the Centre,” Shah said, accusing the government of promoting corruption.

The BJP president also expressed confidence that the party would come to power and promised a slew of development programmes across the state. “The state’s failure in various spheres is because of the 15-year regime of the Okram Ibobi Singh government,” he said.

He also praised the state’s natural beauty and said that tourism should be boosted to generate income and to curb unemployment. He also promised to transform Manipur into an IT hub to stop brain drain and ensure that the Manipur youth did not need to go beyond the state for jobs.

He also mentioned that the hill areas of the state lacked development due to fewer funds being allocated  and promised that the hills would be developed within five years.

“I’m here in Manipur, which is a small state and left behind the crucial Uttar Pradesh elections which is one of the biggest states  because I’m committed to bring uniform development across the country,” Shah asserted.

Pledging that BJP would develop Manipur as a model state, he appealed to the people of Manipur to give an opportunity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi so that he could implement his own plan of development in Manipur successfully.

Noting that Manipur has huge potential in tourism sector, the BJP national president rued that the Ibobi government did nothing for development tourism industry in the State.

"Once BJP comes to power in the State, Manipur will be put on the map of the world’s most popular tourist destinations," Shah said. "Manipur can achieve remarkable economic development through promotion of extensive organic farming but Ibobi has no time for organic farming even though he has enough time for ‘fake encounters’" Shah addded.

Earlier, the BJP chief, along with Union HRD Minister and BJP’s in-charge for Manipur poll, Prakash Javedakar visited key constituencies on a door-to-door campaign asking voters to vote for a change.

Shah, begun his day with a door to door campaign in prestigious Wangkhei constituency where former Congress minister turned BJP heavyweight Erabot Singh is contesting against  Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh’s nephew Okram Henry.

BJP sources added that the party is planning similar door-to-door campaign by central BJP leaders in Thoubal district which has 10 seats and a stronghold of the chief minister and his family.
