Madhu Kishwar attacks 'leftist' Smriti Irani again, this time over DU-UGC spat

Some will remember that the controversy over HRD Minister Smriti Irani's educational qualifications was kicked off by a tweet from avowed Narendra Modi fan Madhu Kishwar.

Now, as the University Grants Commission and Delhi University lock horns on the four-year undergraduate programme of the latter, Kishwar has jumped into the fray once again, this time calling the UGC attack on Delhi University evidence that the BJP has "no education policy yet". She also said the attack on DU's four-year programme was a big win for "leftists".

The UGC and the Delhi University are currently locked in a standoff over the four year undergraduate programme, with the UGC stating that it goes against the National Education Policy that recommends a 10+2+3 format. The DU responded by tweaking its programme, offering a degree in three years but the honours programme in four. UGC has now asked DU not to start intake for the new academic season, leaving the possibility of delayed admissions.

In a series of tweets, Kishwar also said the move was actually targetted at DU vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh who she said was serious about reforming higher education. The move against Singh was being led by the Left, she said. for he had challenged their monopoly in appointments and defininc courses.

Kishwar appeared to be insinuating that Irani had been tutored by Left representatives.

Meanwhile, a report in The Times of India said Irani was keen on a new Education policy, an exercise that would be taken after three decades, "reflecting the aspirations of India now and opportunities in the next decade".
