LS polls: Sonia to campaign for son Rahul in Amethi on Saturday

Amethi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi will be arriving in Amethi on 19 April to address an election rally for her son Rahul Gandhi, the party’s vice-president and candidate from this high-profile constituency. It would be the first time that the Congress president would be campaigning for her son in his constituency. The local unit of the party is making an all-out effort to make Congress president’s visit a grand success. Sister Priyanka Gandhi and brother-in-law Robert Vadra recently campaigned for Rahul when he had arrived to file his nominations papers and Sonia too accompanied her son that day. With television actress-turned-politician Smriti Irani from BJP and AAP’s Kumar Vishwas challenging Rahul in its family pocketborough, Congress appears to be taking no chances in its preparations during the run-up to the polls. Irani has earlier attacked his Congress rival saying “Development is not visible in Amethi. Rahul Gandhi has done nothing to develop the area”. And, poet-turned-politician Vishwas has also earlier taken on the Gandhi scion alleging Rahul Gandhi knew nothing about Amethi, and that he would opt out of the Lok Sabha elections if the Congress leader was able to name all the 17 blocks in the constituency. A two-time MP, Rahul, expressing confidence in people has said that opinion polls will be proved wrong like in 2004 and 2009. PTI
