YSR Congress Chief Jaganmohan Reddy has been taken to the Chanchalguda prison where he will be lodged till 11 June as per an order by the Nampally court made earlier on Monday. The 14-day sentence means that Reddy will remain in prison until just one day before key by-elections are held in 18 constituencies of the state. Reddy moved for bail shortly after the court decision to sentence him to 14 days of judicial custody, but the application was denied. The court however also denied a CBI permission to interrogate Reddy while he was in custody. [/caption] In its arguments against Reddy, the CBI sought the further detention of YSR Congress Chief Jaganmohan Reddy on three counts. First that he is not cooperating with the CBI investigation, secondly that he is likely to influence witnesses if allowed to remain free, and thirdly because he is likely to falsify accounts and destroy key evidence. “Jagan never cooperated in the investigation during the three-day questioning period in true sense,” the CBI counsel alleged. “Jagan can no longer masquerade as a victim of a CBI probe. He cannot assail CBI for being victimised. He has hoodwinked the people of a huge sum of money. We will now show the people about his swindling of money. He cannot seek public sympathy He has deprived poor people and caused them irreparable loss and in turn enriched himself by dubious mechanism by sending the funds abroad and getting the same invested in his companies,” the counsel alleged. However lawyers for Jagan Reddy hit back and accused the CBI of behaving in a high handed manner. They are asking why the CBI feels the need to arrest Jagan now, when the actual investigation into the Disproportionate Assets case against him has been on for the last nine months. They argue that all possible witnesses have already been questioned by the CBI, with three chargesheets also being filed in the case. Jagan’s lawyers are also questioning the timing of his arrest just two weeks before by-elections are held in the state. Earlier Reddy said that his mother Vijayamma would lead the party in the event of his arrest. With inputs from agencies
