Mumbai: A 65-year-old man, undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital in South Mumbai, was fatally assaulted while two other patients were seriously injured when a fellow patient attacked them with an iron stand, police said. PTI[/caption] According to police, the deceased was identified as Lilabihari Thakur, who was repeatedly hit with the iron stand on Monday morning in the general ward of the Bombay Hospital, police said. Thakur was to be discharged from the hospital on Monday. The accused (name withheld) was undergoing treatment for tuberculosis meningitis. “He is a known case of tuberculosis and HIV, and had been admitted here even last year with similar health complaints,” Dr Sagar Sankhle, Bombay Hospital spokesperson, told The Times of India . “The accused had been cooperating with all diagnostic tests and had never showed any violent behaviour until Monday,” he added. According to police, the accused suddenly lifted the iron stand with hooks used for hanging blood and glucose bottles and began hitting Thakur, another patient Prafulchand Parmar (70) and Parmar’s relative Janardhan Arte (66). The accused was immediately taken into police custody and admitted to the JJ Hospital. He has been charged with murder. “The motive behind the attack is not yet clear as the accused is presently undergoing treatment in J J hospital,” senior inspector at Azad Maidan police station Narendra Singh said. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone I Ravindra Shisve, said that the police will get a medical opinion on him first. “We are getting a medical opinion on him, we have also asked the doctors if the accused is fit to record his statements,” Shisve told The Indian Express. Pankaj Thakur, the son of the deceased, told The Indian Express that his father was admitted for treatment of TB in the lungs. “My father was admitted a month ago for treatment of TB in lungs. A week ago, doctors informed us he also had lung cancer. My mother was sent by the nurse to buy medicines when the incident happened. She returned to find my father bleeding profusely.
