If ever the dying OROP campaign needed a rallying point it came in spades when Haryana Home Secretary Anil Kumar’s car knocked down a 90 year old lady doctor Monday. She was also a 1962 war veteran.

The armed forces veterans couldn’t have scripted it more dramatically in their ongoing battle against bureaucrats.

Not only did the bureaucrat's car knock down Captain Dhanoa and break her rib and bruise her eye, but he continued on his saga to attend a play beginning at the Tagore theatre a few yards away. Not his problem, nothing to do with him, the show must go on and I have things to do, out of my sight. Oops sorry, no ,we were not speeding.

Yes, you were.

Add to this arrogance the fact that the cops did not press charges against anyone specific but labelled them ‘unknown persons’ and you have the setting for one more gross episode in VIP bad manners.

Captain Dhanoa showed great courage and even as she lay there on the concrete in the car park (where our Secretary’s vehicle roared in) there was no one from his side to do her any reverence. Her son was so shaken that the offending car was not offered to transport his mother to the hospital. Only the police made a tepid offer to carry her in that condition clumsily in the back of a Gypsy.

No one is very surprised although just about all of the country is outraged at the attitude that these senior officers have towards the public. We have all felt the bile rising when blocked by these VIPs poncing down our roads with the red 'batti' insignia.

The grandson, choked with emotion, put this up on Facebook.

Captain Dhanoa is resting in Chandigarh even as outpourings of support and anger pour in from around the country.

Surely, Anil Kumar could have shown what in the armed forces is known as OLQ or officer like qualities. What’s so special Sir that you could not get out of the car and lend a hand or at least ensure she is taken to hospital.

Is that too much to ask?
