Haji Yusuf: No CBI inquiry, but questions remain

Offering Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah some relief, the anti corruption court in the state has dismissed a petition filed by the kin of Haji Yusuf demanding a CBI inquiry into his death. Yusuf, a National Conference worker, close to the Abdullahs died in police custody on 30 September 2011, after he was handed over to the police by the chief minister who raised charges of corruption against Yusuf. The family alleges that Yusuf had money dealings with Omar and that he was killed at behest of the Abdullahs. Yusuf was arrested from the chief minister’s residence on September 29, and died the following day on September 30, while in police custody. Meanwhile the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government on a petition demanding CBI inquiry into circumstances which lead to Yusuf’s death. The Court has demanded a reply from both the governments in two weeks. The petition was filed by Balwant Singh Mankotia, a sitting MLA of Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party. Agencies
