Garo Hills violence: Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri quits

Shillong: Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri has resigned owing responsibility for the law and order crisis in Garo Hills region, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said today. Warjri had tendered her resignation yesterday but her resignation is yet to be accepted, Sangma told the House on the first day of the six day-long Winter session in Shillong. “It is a fact that home Minister has tendered her resignation letter. I tried to prevail on her to continue in office and I have not accepted her resignation letter,” Mukul said when Opposition Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) questioned the reason for her relinquishing her post.[caption id=“attachment_1815451” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]  Meghalaya Home Minister Roshan Warjri.[/caption] Warjri has claimed responsibility for the law and order situation in the Garo Hills region where police is facing a tough battle to neutralise outlawed militants. Earlier this week, two police personnel were killed and three others injured when an IED planted by the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) exploded in South Garo Hills district. Speaker AT Mondal said he expects to be communicated officially after the chief minister takes a decision on it. Later, speaking to reporters the chief minister said, “I will talk to her (again) and I will try to convince her to continue as the home minister since she is one of the most dedicated and committed cabinet colleagues.” Asked about the content of her letter, Sagma said, “Since I am yet to accept, it is not appropriate to talk about its content.” Warjri’s resignation has fuelled rumours of leadership crisis in Congress. Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy said there is more than law and order crisis for the home minister to tender her resignation. PTI
