From BJP to Naroda Patiya lawyer: Who said what on Maya Kodnani

In a capitulation of sorts, the legal department on the Gujarat government has written to the chief prosecutor in the Naroda Patiya case, asking that the enhanced punishment given to Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi be put on hold. The government has said it wants the decision put on hold until it consults with its Attorney General. This is a collection of reactions to this news: [caption id=“attachment_780559” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] PTI PTI[/caption] Gujarat Finance Minister and spokesperson Nitish Patel: The decision has been withheld for now as we have to take opinion of state advocate general. A final decision will be taken after advocate general gives his opinion." Mukul Sinha, lawyer for victims of Naroda Patiya case: “We have been saying it right from the start. No one among the victims had demanded death sentence. We were surprised the government decided to press for death. Now that there is mounting pressure from Hindutva forces, the government is backing out. It confirms our apprehensions, this was all political play. The manner in which decisions have been taken shows they (SIT) have no voice. They have been denuded of their powers.” Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, BJP: There is no u-turn, left turn or right turn. All is being done according to the law" Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena spokesperson: “If the government has backed out then we welcome it. Punishment given to her is also too much” Meem Afzal, Congress: “This shows the double standards of the Gujarat government. We don’t understand why he appealed first. Now he wants to take it back”
