From being 'upset' to 'more than pleased': All the reactions to court summoning Manmohan Singh

In a day of high drama, the Congress took out a march of solidarity to the residence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, after he was summoned as an accused by a special CBI court in relation to the coal scam. The shock decision by judge Bharat Parashar stunned people from across the political divide, with even the BJP choosing to play down the incident in insinuating that the ex-PM was paying for others sins. “It is a Congress scam because letters (seeking allocation for certain players) would come from somewhere else in the government. Jayanthi Natarajan (Environment Minister during Singh’s regime) has already said how the letters would come to recommend or block projects. Even in court, it is well-known fact that there was extra mis-influence used and therefore, the CBI enquiry”. P Chidambaram

“If the government believes that the CBI is truly independent and, in this case, has come out to an independent and bonafide conclusion exonerating Dr Singh, then why does the government not come out with a statement that it supports the conclusion of CBI. That would be the proper thing to do. It is very difficult in view of the tragic silence of the BJP. The CBI is the executive arm of the government. The CBI has said that there is no change, no ground to take criminal action. But the government must speak up and say we stand by the CBI’s report”. Shashi Tharoor
