However, the conditions for Modi’s rise were set by the ineffectiveness of the Congress in UPA-II, argues Firstpost editor-in-chief R Jagannathan. The Congress’ failure to build on the success of UPA-I and deliver on the economic front created the space for someone like Modi to come to the forefront.

He said that Congress' failings were the 'underpinning' for someone like a Modi to project himself as a solution to all the problems and that people voted for him because he behaved like a prime minister and not a doormat.

With the Congress getting thrashed in the elections and recording its worst performance by a substantial margin in the history of independent India – Jaganathan says it is time to get rid of the Gandhi family, which has become a millstone around the party’s neck.
