The Delhi police has registered an FIR against the agitation held by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other AAP leaders at Rail Bhavan on Monday and Tuesday, despite the imposition of section 144 in and around central Delhi in view of Republic Day celebrations. The FIR does not mention Kejriwal by name, and instead names ‘unknown people’. The case, which is in connection with the violent scuffle that broke out between protestors and party leaders has been registered under sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 133 (Abetment of assault by soldier, sailor or airman on his superior officer, when in execution of his office) of the Indian Penal Code at the Parliament Street Police Station. The violation of section 144 has also been cited. The FIR was filed a day after Kejriwal called off his dramatic two day protest outside Rail Bhavan, where he had been demanding the suspension of five police officers that he accused of ‘inaction’. Kejriwal called off his protest after the SHO of Malviya Nagar, who refused to carry out a raid on the orders of Law Minister Somnath Bharti, and PCR van in-charge of Paharganj, where a Danish women was gangraped last week, were sent on leave, paving the way for an end to the confrontation with the Centre. Appealing to Kejriwal to withdraw his agitation, the Lt Governor said the judicial inquiry into the alleged police inaction would be expedited. The compromise meets only half-way Kejriwal’s demand that five officials be suspended in connection with these two incidents apart from burning of a woman allegedly by her in-laws. Kejriwal read out from the letter of Jung who appealed to him to call off the agitation “in view of the sacrosanct occasion of the Republic Day and the perceived security situation”. The Chief Minister claimed that the police have arrested the culprits in the case of a rape of woman, which was also one of his demands that triggered the agitation. AAP sources, meanwhile, said that “senior officers” of Delhi Police had met a Delhi minister last morning with a view to ending the “deadlock”. The crowds swelled during the day, raising tensions. By evening, AAP supporters - wearing their trademark white caps and waving the tricolour - had clashed with police after breaking barricades. Some stoned the police personnel who retaliated violently. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had also agreed to hear a PIL seeking action against Kejriwal and Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti for resorting to “agitation and street fight” for removal of some police officials. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam posted the hearing for Friday.
