Delhi poll results not a referendum on Modi govt's performance, says Naidu

Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu says, "It is the election for the Chief Minister and not for the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi is not fighting assembly elections. It is a state election. You are going to elect a Chief Minister not a Prime Minister. It is the BJP versus the rest. That is all."

It's all a little too much for Kiran Bedi

Bedi, the BJP's CM candidate burst into tears this morning while campaigning for her party in Delhi. "I'm overwhelmed by the love from people... I will return it," she told cameras waiting to capture the moment.

Congress slams BJP for calling people from northeast 'immigrants'

BJP's vision document — 24 pages long which with 270 points — for the Delhi assembly polls on Tuesday stirred up a major controversy by referring to people from northeastern states as "immigrants". The Congress immediately demanded an apology and removal of the words.

"BJP's vision document has a pointer called 'north-eastern immigrants to be protected'. The word immigrant is used when people move from one country to another, so does BJP consider people from the North-Eastern states as residents of some other country or the north-eastern states according to them are not part of India? We demand that they remove that line from the manifesto and apologise to public," said Ajay Maken.

Kiran Bedi promises 'Dil ki Baat' programme if BJP comes to power

"There will be a monthly radio address 'Dil ki Baat'. This programme will be organised every month where residents will be told about what the government has done during the past month," said Kiran Bedi.

"Government will reach at your doorstep and your ears on the new initiatives taken and new policies brought. Children, youth, money, the elderly and business will be informed on the new things and their rights, especially that segment who don't see television or read newspapers," Bedi said.

Omar Abdullah thinks AAP has been set up in funding scam

Even as AAP is in the eye of the storm over allegations of money laundering, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah took to Twitter in defending AAP saying they have been set up.

BJP releases vision document for Delhi polls

The BJp today released its vision document for the upcoming polls. The BJP chief in Delhi, Satish Upadhyay said that vision document included BJP's priorities-- providing cheap electricity, solving traffic problems and providing 1 lakh homes to middle-class.

He said that 7 February is very important, as that date will decide which direction will take.

"We have to make Delhi a world class city,"  Upadhyay said.

Kiran Bedi said that the party will focus on urgent matters like women safety, security, youth affairs, electricity, water, cleanliness, environment on a priority basis. Bedi said the vision document which focuses on more than 270 issues will help make Delhi a world class city by all standards.

AAP to approach SC, ask for SIT probe into funding for all parties

Faced with allegations of receiving funds from "dubious" companies, the AAP on Monday night demanded a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe funding of all three major parties in Delhi polls and said it was ready to face any action if found guilty.

AAP leader Ashutosh took to Twitter to attack the BJP and asked the party to disclose the source of its funds.

He also said that AAP will write letters to BJP and Congress presidents requesting to cooperate in SIT probe about their fundings for 'clean politics'.

Kiran Bedi almost just bested Arnab Goswami's 'never ever' while responding to a question from the media. A journalist caught Bedi on campaign trail and asked if Narendra Tandon has resigned because of her 'autocratic' ways. Bedi shook her head sagely and only said, "No, no, no, no..."

BJP comes out with new ad, Aam Aadmi Party cheers on

Delhi election tracker Tata Nano has more seats than the BJP point out Twitter jokes

BJP has come out with another advertisement lampooning Arvind Kejriwal, but the Aam Aadmi Party isn't quite complaining. The new print ad has a caricature of Kejriwal waving a jhadu at a crowd. It calls the AAP chief 'updrabi gotra (nuisance causing agent)' among other things. Though Ashutosh wanted the ad retracted, Yogendra Yadav added an interesting perspective to the BJP's renewed vigour in deriding AAP.

Though he said that he was 'surprised that the EC approved the advertisement put out by the BJP' he also pointed out how BJP was just furthering the AAP's cause and advertising on their behalf. He said that since AAP doesn't have a big advertising budget, BJP can keep mentioning them in their ads and keep Delhi focused on AAP. Once they have Delhi's attention, thanks to BJP's campaigning, they can convince people to vote them.

Yadav pointed out how, one-rant-too-many Kiran Bedi is a boon is disguise for the BJP. He said, "One interview Kiran Bedi does is enough to help us for the next five days."

"We don't have any money of such kind, the BJP is doing such advts for us... we thank them," he added.

Why bring unlucky people to power in Delhi, says Modi

Addressing a BJP rally in Dwarka, Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Our opponents say that Modi is lucky, that's why prices have come down in India. But if Modi's luck is good for India, what can be a better thing? If I am lucky, then why bring to power those who are unlucky?"

Modi also took a dig at the opposition parties in Delhi and said, "Governments who believe in dharnas just want airtime on TV...I've heard politicians talk about unauthorised colonies in Delhi, and then give unauthorised promises."

Kiran Bedi says her name is Vikas Bedi

Trying to convince the people of her commitment to Delhi, an enthusiastic Kiran Bedi said, "I have come to interlink the development of Delhi with the Centre. Now, my name is Vikas Bedi."

AAP releases manifesto:

Ahead of the polls in the nation's capital, the Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday released its manifesto, outlining its goals and mission for Delhi. Releasing the manifesto, Arvind Kejriwal said that their manifesto is like a holy book.

The manifesto focused on the party's agenda for ensuring development, women's safety and water and electricity supply across the city.

EC seizes more than 5,000 bottles of illicit liquor

According to a PTI report, Election Commission officials seized 5,964 bottles of illicit liquor from a godown allegedly owned by AAP's Uttam Nagar candidate Naresh Balyan last night. "A total of 5964 bottles (4473 litres) of Haryana-made liquor was seized from a godown by flying squad and police in a late night joint-operation," said a senior EC official.

"Balyan has not been named in the FIR registered at Uttam Nagar Police Station and we are investigating if the godown was owned by him or not. Once our investigation is completed, we will then add name in the FIR," the official said.

However, AAP leaders later said that the EC has clarified that the raid was not on AAP candidate's premises.

"Balyan has not been named in the FIR registered at Uttam Nagar Police Station and we are investigating if the godown was owned by him or not. Once our investigation is completed, we will then add name in the FIR," the official had said.

BJP asks AAP five new questions

BJP on Friday asked AAP five new questions, as part of the series of five questions BJP promised to ask AAP every day from 29 January to 5 February ahead of the Delhi polls.

"Why is AAP using volunteers from places other than Delhi? Didn't you find volunteers to ask for votes in Delhi?" Nirmala Sitharaman asked AAP.

"Being a party which keeps accusing other parties of being corrupt, why has AAP not submitted accounts to the Election Commission for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls till now?" BJP asked AAP in a second question.

Accusing AAP of being anti-women, Sitharaman also asked AAP, "Why is there an exodus of women from your party?"

She said that AAP had no respect for constitutional bodies like the Election Commission and high court and also accused the AAP of ignoring the Lok Ayukta issue. Read the full report here.

Kejriwal slams BJP ad showing Anna Hazare with garland

Aam Aadmi Party on Friday took a swipe at the BJP for its newspaper advertisement, in which Anna Hazare's cartoon has been shown with a garland, prompting AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to cheekily ask whether the saffron party had "killed" the veteran anti-corruption crusader.

29 January 2015

28 January Modi's lookalike to campaign for him in Delhi With Prime Minister Narendra Modi having to focus exclusively on visiting US President Barack Obama over the past couple of days, there was someone else who tried to make sure that poll-bound Delhi didn't feel ignored. And that was the Prime Minister's lookalike Abhinandan Pathak (52). Pathak claims that he will be campaigning in all the 70 constituencies in Delhi ahead of the polls. “I figured that everyone wants Modiji to campaign in their area, a desire the Prime Minister cannot fulfill because of his busy schedule. As his staunch supporter, I will represent him and remind them of his presence. I will cycle to each constituency and have started doing it from last week. Most of the people I have met support BJP here,” he declares. Bedi, who in 1975 had led the Delhi Police contingent, was seen seated in the VIP enclosure at the venue, while Kejriwal was upset because he wasn't invited for the parade. "I think he is playing sob sob. I think he must grow up. Invitations come not when you desire. They come by something else but they are never demanded, they come by rules and regulations, by protocols whatever it is," Bedi told a TV channel. The AAP accused the government of "politicising" the occasion by not inviting Kejriwal. "It is for the country to see what is being done. How a sacred occasion like the Republic day is being politicised. the camera was focusing a little extra on her," senior AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said. Bedi to sue Kejriwal for using her picture on posters Delhi BJP's chief ministerial candidate and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi will sue AAP chief and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for defaming her in a picture used without her permission. The Aam Aadmi Party had put up combination pictures of Kejriwal and Bedi suggesting that Kejriwal was honest and Bedi an opportunist. The posters were pasted at the back of auto-rickshaws in poll-bound Delhi. She also served him a 24-hour deadline to withdraw the pictures.

25 January The Aam Aadmi Party has found a cool way to campaign. Other than their extensive door-to-door campaign, the party workers have also started boarding metro trains in groups and shouting slogans like ‘panch saal Kejriwal’. 24 January 2015 After Shanti's outburst, now Prashant upset with Arvind Kejriwal All may not be well within the Aam Aadmi Party. Days after senior party leader Shanti Bhushan chose to take a dig at Kejriwal for his style of functioning, his son and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has now reportedly raised objections about the candidates contesting the polls. According to this DNA report, Prashant Bhushan is at odds with Kejriwal, as he had submitted a list of 12 AAP candidates with dubious reputation. The list has been submitted to AAP's Lokpal, Admiral (retd) Laxminarayan Ramdas, and it was asserted that they should be removed from the party, if the charges are right. "There were a lot of complaints about the kind of candidates selected, especially those who had been para-dropped into the party recently. Some of them were referred to the party Lokpal, who recommended the removal of two candidates," Prashant Bhushan told DNA. Women of Delhi have faith in Kiran Bedi, says Amit Shah Defending his party's move of inducting Kiran Bedi and making her the party's CM candidate, BJP chief Amit Shah said: "BJP has been in favour of including eminent personalities from different walks of life into the party and Kiran Bedi is one such example... Women in Delhi have faith in her (Kiran Bedi) as she has done much for their security." Digvijaya calls AAP a bunch of pseudo civil society activists Aam Aadmi Party is the 'B Team' of BJP and the Congress had "chosen a lesser evil" by supporting Arvind Kejriwal in forming the government in Delhi in 2013, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted on Saturday. The Congress General Secretary also sought to highlight the links between Kejriwal and the RSS, alleging that Kejriwal attended the meeting of the Vivekanand International Foundation in 2010 with Sangh ideologues S Gurumurthy, KN Govindacharya and other leaders of the RSS. "Didn't Kejriwal attend meeting in Feb 2010 in Vivekanand International Foundation along with Gurumurty Govindacharya & other RSS leaders? "Weren't Ramdev and a representative of Sri Sri Ravishankar also present in the meeting at Vivekanand International Foundation in Feb 2010?," he asked. "...Every word I said about the Pseudo Civil Society Activists has come true," the Rajya Sabha MP said. AAP's Shanti Bhushan says Kiran Bedi as good as Kejriwal In what comes in as terrible news for an already cracking AAP, its founding member Shanti Bhushan today praised BJP's CM candidate Kiran Bedi saying she would be as efficient an administrator as his own party's convener Arvind Kejriwal. Leaving his own party red faced, Bhushan told ANI, "It is a master stroke by BJP to bring Kiran Bediji and declare her party's CM candidate... BJP recognised force of Anna’s andolan and were forced to bring as CM candidate, a crusader (Kiran Bedi) against corruption. Kiranji made a huge contribution to 'India against corruption', she will provide a very clean and efficient administration." Bhushan went a step ahead and suggested that the AAP should be happy if Bedi becomes CM, saying "the party was born out of a crusade against corruption, so if a member (read Kiran Bedi) of the same crusade becomes chief minister, they should all be happy." AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal called out his counterpart Kiran Bedi on Twitter, asking her to unblock him so that they could have a debate. She said yes... but only on the floor of the house. Meanwhile news channel ANI jumped in, asking Bedi, Kejriwal and Congress chief organiser Ajay Maken to participate in a moderated debate. Maken and Kejriwal agreed, but Bedi backed down, saying she was there to 'deliver' and not 'debate'. All in all a very exciting social media morning.

Iron lady vs I run man

The BJP's Sambit Patra scoffed at Kejriwal's Twitter challenge to Bedi, calling it a publicity gimmick.

16th January 2014

Kiran Bedi has a hard time convincing BJP leaders to listen to her when she was inducted into the party:

The camera repeatedly pans over the bored and distracted faces of the leaders in the audience which is far too busy talking amongst themselves to pay heed to Bedi. She is reduced to alternately begging and bullying them into attention.

"Aap meri taraf dekho. Main baat kar rahi hoon. Dekhiye main itni energy aapko de rahi hoon. Kamaskam aap mujhe aap directly dekho aur suno," (Please look at me. I am speaking. See, I am giving so much energy to you. At least, look at me directly and listen) she says, but to little avail. "Can we sit down? I am getting a little disturbed. Just give me ten more minutes and I will finish. Can I have your attention? Thank you!" she complains soon after, until she finally loses patience, declaring, "Saathiyon, aapko entertainment chahiye, to bahar chale jao." (If you want entertainment, please go out.)
